We all still feel like we are living on top of each other at the moment and taking time to yourself might feel impossible but it is something that we can really benefit from, especially if you're looking after children all day.

The world can feel like it's full of noise, making it difficult to process even simple daily activities and emotions, leaving your brain fried. Giving yourself just a few minutes of peace allows the mind to catch up. Making you more able to resolve and work through the problems and stresses you're facing.

Whilst it might be more complicated to take time alone with little ones around, it's not impossible! Whether its getting up that little bit earlier or taking time at the end of the day just remember #selflove is't selfish.

Messy play can be like Marmite – love or hate! BUT it’s great for little ones’ sensory exploration and development, while providing plenty of opportunity to work on those fine motor skills.

It is also possible to limit the devastation to some degree. Investing in a small paddling pool to contain the chaos of messy play or a plastic ground sheeting and rolls of lining paper are a perfect for small hands that don’t want to limit themselves to a piece of A4!

The below suggestions are best for little ones aged six months upwards – or from weaning.

~ Rainbow spaghetti. When cooking the spaghetti, do not cook for quite as long as you would if you were planning on eating it, and then run under cold water to cool it down. Add a few drops of food colouring and give it a good stir to mix and cover it all in the colour. Now lay the spaghetti out on a tray or large plate and let it dry overnight or for a few hours. If you don’t do this then the food colour will come off easily all over your baby! When dry, put it on a large tray in front of your baby or on their high chair and just let them play and explore the textures and colour. It’s great if you can do two or three different colours and put them out together.

~ Dry coloured rice. Pop some rice into a sealable sandwich bag about half full, add a few drops of food colouring (the gel ones are better) and seal up. Now shake it and squish until the rice is all coated and there are no big patches of food colouring. Your baby may also enjoy watching you doing this bit! Now tip it all out in a thin layer onto a tray to dry overnight. Once dry you can put it into a large tray or plate and mix with other colours for your baby. You can also add cups and containers for tipping and filling. The really large flower pot trays are good for this sort of messy play. You can use the rice a few times if it doesn’t get anything mucky in it.

Learning to understand what your baby's needs and desires are an essential part of parenting. Baby signing can help improve communication before spoken language has developed. Here are Magda's Top Tips for Baby Signing 👍

• Sign early: The sooner you start to sign the sooner it becomes a natural part of your communication with your baby.

• Sign as needed: Choose signs that are important, meaningful and useful to your child. Signs that express everyday needs, such as being hungry, thirsty and sleepy.

• Speak & sign at the same time: Say the word out loud to ensure your baby connects the sign with the spoken word.

Sign consistently: Repetition is key! By seeing the same sign over and over, your baby will learn and imitate them.

Sign clearly: Your baby may adapt a sign, it's unlikely to be perfect but as long as you recognise that sign, acknowledge and respond to it and then reflect back the true sign.

Follow your baby's signs: If you notice your baby has created their own sign for something that you don't already have a sign for then go with it. This is not a sign language, it is an aid to communicate.

Use the world around you: If you are signing for an object, make sure to sign close to or on top of the object.

Rewards: Your baby is more likely to learn a sign if they get what they ask for promptly. So if a baby signs for "all done", take away the plate and give praise.

Sign up the whole family: the more people who can do some basic signs, the happier your baby will be. Teach some important signs to siblings, grandparents and caregivers.

What is your face saying? Think about facial expression and body language. If you are signing happy make sure your face reflects this! 😀
